Creating a favicon makes websites cool and more corporate. It is usually the company logo that were used as favicons. Creating one is easy as 1,2,3. Some tutorials require ico plugins or ico software, but having tried one using a jpg or gif is possible.
To start you just need to create a 16x16. Or you may start with 32x32 or 64x64 pixel whichever you are comfortable with, the important is you still need to downsize it to 16x16px. Once the image is created. Save it as jpg or gif, whatever is needed. And before you upload it. Upload it to your web server where your index file is located and rename it to favicon.ico.
It will take a while before you see the result, but clearing cache will do it quickly. I hope that helps.
